The Ministry of Natural Resources and Climate Change and the Ministry of Local Governent, Unity and Culture held a joint clean up exercise at Bwandilo, Area 47 in Lilongwe.

The exercise that was also joined by Local Government, Unity and Culture Minister, Hon Richard Chimwendo Banda was in observance of the National Clean Up Day which is scheduled to take place second Friday of every month.

During the exercise, people removed garbage that was disposed from the shops around Bwandilo Trading Centre and heaped a few metres away from the road such that if it was left unchecked, the garbage could have spilled over onto the main road.

Speaking after the exercise, Hon. Chimwendo appealed to people in the country to always clean up their premises to leave in a clean and healthy environment in order to prevent spread of diseases.

He also told local councils to avail bins and other necessary tools that will help improve on waste management.

Lilongwe City Mayor, heads of departments, the youth and some community members who ply their trade at Bwandilo were some of the people who participated in the cleaning up exercise that was coordinated by Lilongwe City Council and the Environmental Affairs Department as well as the Malawi Environment Authority (MEPA) in the Ministry of Natural Resources and Climate Change.
