Minister took part in the High-Level Meeting on the Midterm Review

The Minister of Natural Resources and Climate Change Honorable Dr. Michael Usi yesterday 18th May 2023, took part in the High-Level Meeting on the Midterm Review of the 2015-2030 Sendai Framework on Disaster Risk Reduction.

The meeting, which was held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, provided a platform for Member States, the United Nations system partners, and other stakeholders to reflect on the findings and recommendations of the Midterm Review, to examine context shifts and emerging issues since 2015, and identify course corrections and new initiatives to more effectively address the systemic nature of risk, and realize the outcomes and goals of the Sendai Framework, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the Paris Agreement and other agreements, frameworks, and conventions.

In his speech, the Minister said nations, and institutions – public and private – across the globe, must act in solidarity through partnerships that must be created, strengthened, and consolidated for risk-informed decision-making.

“It is high time all nations adopted a political declaration charting the way forward for action over the next seven years to reduce risk and increase disaster resilience,” said Hon. Min. Dr. Usi.

Meanwhile, Malawi has made significant strides by mainstreaming Disaster Risk Management into Malawi National development plans and programs. The Malawi 2063 (10 years) Implementation Plan recognizes “Improved disaster risk reduction and response” as one of the key outcomes of addressing adverse climate effects, and ensuring the well-being of Malawians and the protection of trees and forests from disasters.
